Ricky Hoy Iomeng, deputy director of Macau's government tourism agency, hinted in comments on Thursday that changes to local casinos offering free snacks and drinks at game venues "should not have a significant impact on visitors."
GGRAsia previously approached the city casino regulator, the Game Inspection Coordinating Agency, for comment on the government's opposition to the practice of casino operators distributing free food and drinks to customers, as it noted on social media a few weeks ago, but has not received a response. The free food and drink trend has anecdotally been shown to be on the rise this year.
"I have no comment on these kinds of new methods," said Hoy (file photo) in a commentary on the television news service of local public broadcaster TDM.
However, he added: "Compared to last weekend, we didn't notice a decrease in tourist numbers. So, I think the way they serve snacks at the casino - or the change - shouldn't have much impact on visitors."
Mr. Hoy said, "Most tourists who come to Macau don't come to eat these kinds of snacks at the casino for free."
There have been recent reports through mainland China coaching would-be visitors to Macau on how social media influencers can use special discounts or food samples offered by local casinos, shops and cafes to enjoy time in Macau for very cheap or almost free.
Last month, the Macau Daily, a Chinese-language news outlet, quoted a head of the local Food and Beverage Trade Association as saying that downtown restaurants have seen an increase in operations due to curbs on free snacks on casino floors.
But in comments on Thursday, Hoy said authorities were working to curb what he called "illegal tourism."
It was understood as a reference to a tour that was not sanctioned by the authorities.
Hoy said MGTO officials visited popular tourist sites such as Border Gate immigration corridors serving neighboring Zhuhai in mainland China's Guangdong province and the ruins of Sao Paulo to observe and investigate signs of unauthorized tour groups.
Such work has also involved collaborating with the city's public security police and using channels of communication from tourism offices with mainland and neighbouring Hong Kong authorities.
